The Pirate Way

The Retirement Pirate Code

How We Sail.

The Creed describes what a Retirement Pirate seeks to create. The Code defines how a Pirate navigates the voyage — how we approach risk, treasure, freedom, storms, systems, time, and the choices that shape a life.

Retirement Pirate steering a ship through rough seas while avoiding catastrophic risk and sailing toward freedom, choice, legacy, and purpose.

The Code

The Way a Pirate Sails

I choose to live boldly and intentionally — not by default, not by fear, and not by the Crown’s design.

I steer my ship with clarity, conviction, and control.

I refuse to expose my life to catastrophic risks that can destroy what I’ve built.
I protect what matters — my time, my health, my relationships, and my treasure.

I build wealth by design, leveraging strategy, contracts, and systems that support freedom, not fragility.
I shift catastrophic risks off my shoulders and onto institutions built to bear them — so I can continue sailing through any storm.

I embrace risk as the engine of progress — but only the kind I can survive.
Like the great houses of finance, I take small, intelligent risks with the odds in my favor, and I transfer every catastrophic danger away from me so no storm can break my course.

I value the life I have now — the moments, the experiences, the purpose — and I will not postpone the joy I can live today.

I seek financial freedom as the removal of constraint, the liberation of choice, and the confidence to live life on my terms.

I collect two forms of treasure: the wealth that sustains freedom and the experiences that make freedom worth having.

I rise stronger from storms, stand firm in uncertainty, and carry forward the lessons earned through adversity.
I build a legacy that outlives me — one that protects, inspires, and empowers those who follow.

I am a Retirement Pirate — the captain of my ship.

Beyond the Words

The Code in Practice

The Pirate Code is not a demand for perfection. It is a way of making decisions. When the sea changes, circumstances change with it. The principles remain.

01

Choose Your Course

Live deliberately instead of accepting the default.

Most lives arrive with a prewritten itinerary: what success should look like, what should be purchased, when work should end, what retirement should mean, and which choices are considered normal. A Pirate is willing to question that itinerary. The course should serve the life — not simply reproduce what everyone else is doing.

02

Protect Against Ruin

A risk is very different when failure can end the voyage.

Retirement Pirates are not obsessed with eliminating uncertainty. Growth requires uncertainty. But catastrophic risk deserves different treatment. When a danger can destroy the ability to recover, continue, or choose what happens next, the Code favors removing, transferring, limiting, or structuring that exposure whenever reasonably possible.

03

Use Systems Intelligently

Learn the rules before deciding how to play.

Contracts, businesses, markets, insurance companies, banks, governments, tax systems, employers, and financial institutions operate according to structures and incentives. A Pirate learns how those structures work and looks for legitimate ways to make them serve the voyage instead of simply accepting the default outcome.

04

Take Risks You Can Survive

Risk is not the enemy. Ruin is.

A Pirate does not seek a life without risk. That would also mean giving up much of the opportunity for growth, discovery, adventure, progress, and reward. The objective is to take risks where failure remains survivable — preserving the ability to learn, adapt, and sail again.

05

Live While You Are Alive

Tomorrow matters. So does today.

Retirement planning can become a strange exercise in postponing life so that life may eventually begin. The Code rejects that bargain. Preparing for the future matters, but the years used preparing are part of the voyage too. A Pirate seeks a structure that can support tomorrow without sacrificing every worthwhile experience available today.

06

Remove Constraints

Financial freedom is measured in choices, not appearances.

More money is useful when it creates more capability. The objective is not wealth for display, status for its own sake, or the endless accumulation of things. Financial freedom means progressively removing money's ability to dictate where you live, what work you must accept, what risks you must endure, and what opportunities you are forced to decline.

07

Collect Two Kinds of Treasure

Wealth funds the voyage. It is not the voyage.

One form of treasure creates economic resilience and freedom. The other is the life that freedom makes possible: relationships, experiences, memories, health, curiosity, growth, contribution, and time spent doing things worth remembering. A successful voyage needs both.

08

Keep Sailing

Storms change the sailor.

Some storms can be avoided by choosing a different course. Others arrive regardless of preparation. The Code does not promise calm seas. It calls for enough resilience, structure, perspective, and adaptability that a storm does not automatically become the end of the voyage. Learn from it. Adjust the sails. Carry the lesson forward.

The Crown

Not by Default.

“Not by fear, and not by the Crown’s design.”

In Retirement Pirate language, the Crown represents the systems, incentives, institutions, expectations, and defaults encountered along the voyage.

The Crown is not one organization secretly controlling the world. It is the collection of structures around us — employers, governments, markets, banks, insurers, advertisers, industries, cultural expectations, algorithms, contracts, and other systems with incentives of their own.

Some of those systems are useful. Some are necessary. Some create extraordinary opportunity. Some extract more value than they provide. Many do all of those things at different times.

A Retirement Pirate does not reflexively reject the system. A Pirate learns how it works, decides where interests align, recognizes where they do not, and retains the ability to choose.

Underneath the Code

Stormathrive

Stormathrive is the philosophy and way of being underneath Retirement Pirate. It begins with a simple recognition: storms are part of the voyage. The objective is not to build a life so sheltered that nothing difficult can happen. It is to build one capable of continuing when difficulty arrives.

01 — Exposure

Accept Useful Stress

Growth, discovery, progress, competition, adventure, and meaningful achievement often require discomfort and uncertainty. Avoiding all stress can also mean avoiding much of what makes life feel alive.

02 — Structure

Define the Downside

The purpose of structure is not to guarantee success. It is to keep failure from becoming fatal whenever possible. Preserve the ability to recover, rethink, change course, and try again.

03 — Adaptation

Use the Storm

Storms reveal weaknesses, assumptions, priorities, and capabilities. When the weather clears, carry the lessons forward rather than rebuilding the same vulnerabilities that existed before it arrived.

Where the Code Applies

The Code Sails Both SEAs.

Retirement Pirate is not merely a philosophy about money, and it is not merely a philosophy about lifestyle. The Code governs how a Pirate navigates both.

SEA #1

Spectacular Earthly Abode

The life being lived.

Health. Relationships. Experiences. Family. Time. Curiosity. Growth. Adventure. Purpose. Contribution. Joy.

The Code asks whether the decisions being made actually support the life you say you want.

SEA #2

Systemic Economic Arena

Everywhere you make, invest, and spend money.

Work and business. Markets. Banking. Insurance. Taxes. Contracts. Purchases. Financial products. Institutions and the other systems through which money moves.

The Code asks whether those systems are increasing your freedom or quietly becoming another constraint.

The Pirate Way

You Are Still the Captain.

The sea will change. The wind will change. Your ship will change. You will change. The Code does not prescribe one route through life. It reminds you who is responsible for choosing the course.
