The Black Swan

This book changed the way I think about events that appear unlikely until they happen and then seem obvious afterward. Its value is less about predicting the next surprise and more about recognizing how dangerous it can be to build a plan that requires the future to behave as expected.

Fooled by Randomness

Outcomes are easy to explain after they occur. That does not mean the explanation is correct. This book is a useful reminder that luck, timing, selection bias, and randomness can be mistaken for skill—and that both success and failure deserve more careful examination than the story we immediately attach to them.

The Wall Street Gang

This is an older book, and financial markets and regulation have changed considerably since it was published. I recommend it because it forces the reader to think about incentives: who is being paid, how institutions operate, whose interests may differ, and why understanding the structure around a transaction matters.

I do not treat every claim in the book as a description of today's financial system. Its value for me is the habit of looking past the surface and asking how the machinery works.
